Our Environment

We're committed to caring for the environment and surrounding communities. For a detailed analysis of the Nemadji Trail Energy Center's environmental and social factors, see the October 2020 and June 2022 Environmental Assessments.

Facility Water Usage

The facility captures heat generated from converting natural gas to electricity and uses it to create steam that powers a second turbine, generating more electricity. Water is needed to create the steam. The facility will use an efficient air-cooled heat exchanger that requires much less water usage than other technologies.

Facility Water Usage Diagram

The facility’s water needs will be supplied by the municipal water system, using up to 60,000 gallons of water on days when the plant is operating.

Air Quality

A 2022 study found that the Nemadji Trail Energy Center will lead to a reduction of emissions by the electric system by paving the way for additional renewable energy sources, leading to the displacement of higher-emission fossil fuel plants.

An analysis of Air Quality impacts was included in the October 2020 Environmental Assessment. Based on that analysis, it is anticipated that the facility would not cause or contribute to significant adverse ambient air quality impacts. Emissions resulting from facility operations will occur and we have obtained the appropriate air permit approvals.

Noise

Noise levels from the facility to the adjacent neighborhood are expected to be between 40 and 55 decibels.

Energy Center will produce between 40 and 50 decibels

Lighting

The facility will have exterior lighting for safety and security. Lights will be required in parking areas, on service roads around the facility, at pedestrian entrances to various buildings and along walkways on the property. All outdoor light fixtures will be fully shielded and directed downward to minimize light visible from adjacent properties. The trees being added to the property will also help minimize light visibility.

Wetlands

The Nemadji Trail Energy Center has been designed to minimize its impact on wetland and water resources. The construction of the Nemadji Trail Energy Center will not result in a loss of wetlands in Wisconsin, due to a mitigation plan that would replace any impacted wetlands with additional wetland resources.

Our Community

Many of us call this area home. We work here, live here and enjoy the local recreation. Maintaining the surrounding environment and community is a cornerstone of our project. Over the past several years, we have analyzed and reviewed our facility plans to better understand its potential impacts and how we can best address, modify and mitigate them.
